Polysulphate reduces the incidence of melon diseases by 47%, while increasing the weight of melon fruit by 8.7%.

Objective

To evaluate the effect of Polysulphate fertilizer as compared to the farmers’ practice on the yield and quality of melon in East Java, Indonesia.

Treatments

This trial consisted of two treatments: the farmers’ practice as the control, and the treatment plot with Polysulphate applied to the soil 5 days after planting at 40 g/plant (680 kg/ha). This was an unreplicated demonstration plot with a 200 plant sample size. Both treatments were fertilized with KNO3, 12-50-0, 16-16-16, and 15-10-22 once every 5 days applied in solution through soil drenching.

Results

  • The melons treated with Polysulphate showed more uniform growth than the control
  • There were no cracked fruits amongst the Polysulphate treated melons
  • The plants fertilized with Polysulphate were more resistant to disease attack compared to the control, with a decrease of 47% in the incidence of disease
  • On average melon fruit were heavier in the Polysulphate treated plot, with an 8.7% increase in average melon fruit weight
